Intent
The PSHE curriculum at Edith Kay School delivers a programme which provides our pupils with the necessary tools to enable them to excel in their physical health, relationships, sexual health & awareness; it also equips them with the necessary skills to function positively in the wider society. PSHE helps our pupils to learn about key life lessons and skills that will enable them to flourish outside of an educational setting. Furthermore, PSHE gives our pupils the opportunity to explore their own identities and be accepting of others, form meaningful relationships and develop a moral understanding.
Implementation
The PSHE lessons are usually delivered on a one-to-one basis so that pupils can experience a more personal learning experience. As some of the topics we cover can evoke different conflicting opinions, we believe one-to-one sessions are the key to holding a positive lesson. We always use visual learning aids, such as PowerPoints and video, as it creates a more immersive learning experience. This works well with our pupils, many of whom have shorter attention spans. For certain pupils, we have integrated some coping strategies, based upon their EHCP, to implement during our lessons; for example:
We give all pupils time to process and understand instructions, questions and activities. Throughout the lesson we continually check for understanding, either by asking questions or asking pupils to relay the information in their own words. We use scenarios to show real-life examples of the topics we cover.
Impact
Through the PSHE curriculum, Edith Kay School equips pupils with the necessary knowledge and skills to be productive members of society; they learn how to navigate their own mental well-being as well as others’. Pupils will have an understanding of the different types of relationships they could experience in the wider world. With the knowledge they have received through the PSHE curriculum, pupils should become more productive members of society.
