Intent
At Edith Kay School our science curriculum is designed to recognise that our students join us from a wide range of settings with differing prior learning experiences. We recognise that every student is a unique individual and welcome differences within our school community. We want students to be excited and curious about the world around them. They need to be equipped with the knowledge and scientific skills they will need in everyday life and also for the next steps if they choose to pursue A levels, BTEC or a career in science.
The GCSE Science curriculum is based on what the students need to know by the end of Key Stage 4 as directed by the National Curriculum. The students study AQA Combined Science Trilogy. Students have the option of doing separate science GCSEs if they enter the school, having covered enough of the curriculum at their previous school and if they are dedicated to spending more time at school and at home covering the extra work needed.
Implementation
Science at Edith Kay School is delivered in such a way as to be engaging and accessible to all. This allows students to enjoy learning science in a comfortable, non-pressurised environment so that they develop an enthusiasm for the subject as they gain new knowledge alongside new experiences.
A significant focus on social skills and emotional regulation is needed to remove barriers to learning and identify any additional needs that students may have.
We believe that the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values underpins the ability to learn. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning through different mechanisms, such as our Science Event Days.
We use our school values to ‘find and nurture each person’s unique spark’ to promote positive attitudes to learning, reflecting the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.
We believe that we are an integral part of the wider community. We develop this through our curriculum (e.g. community clean-up projects). By learning new skills, our students can be strong members of our communities both now and in the future. Furthermore, we make links to SMSC by raising awareness of how Science:
